Our Story

Chai has brought us closer together throughout our lives. From after school brews, to university catch-ups, exploring the landscapes of India and even on our road-trip around Australia – we never felt too far away from home when sharing a comforting cup of chai, with each other and everyone we met.

As the flavours of chai became more popular, we looked forward to exploring the city in search of the perfect brew. But as a diabetic, co-founder of Chhabra’s Chai, Pratima, found tasting the more popular chai blends on the market particularly difficult. Many western chai alternatives such as instant powdered mixtures and tea bag infusions, are often overly sweetened or fail to create the intensely defining flavours of chai. Unable to find an authentic tasting chai that was also sugar free and 100% natural, as self-declared chai-vanists, we founded Chhabra’s Chai. Now, we are on our way to starting our #chairevolution!

Our Teas

All our chai’s are created to deliver authentic flavours. From countless rounds of tea tasting we have found the perfect ratio of spices, which we hand grind and blend using traditional Indian practices; this means no sugars, no liquids, no powders, no preservatives – just natural chai goodness.

After much research we selected a bold black tea sourced directly from organic tea farms in the Assam Valley of India.  We were committed to sharing the highest grade organic tea from day one, to ensure the Chhabra’s Chai brand reflected our own ethical values.

Tea leaves need room to expand for a full-bodied flavour. The standard tea bag material is often low-flow, preventing the brew from diffusing beyond the inside of the bag. Our tea is either loose leaf or served in larger biodegradable tea bag to ensure maximum infusion .

We encourage making our chai the right way- on the hob! The perfect chai takes time because all good things are worth waiting for. We recognise the importance of taking time to unwind and #takeaChaiMoment.

Redefining Chai

So what is chai?

Chai is a spiced milky tea steeped in rich history. It played an important role in many different cultures for centuries, but recipes are seen to vary across continents, cultures and families.

In India, the most common combination of spices include: cardamom pods, cinnamon sticks, cloves, ginger and black peppercorns. Traditionally, Indians viewed chai as a herbal medicine rather than a recreational beverage, whereby emphasis was placed on the health benefits of each spice.

This stems from Ayurveda ( /äyərˈvādə/ ) which is  one of the most ancient forms of holistic well-being which is still widely practiced in India today. Ayurveda seeks to treat and integrate body, mind, and spirit using a comprehensive holistic approach especially by emphasizing diet, herbal remedies, exercise, meditation, breathing, and physical therapy!

So for us, Chhabra’s Chai isn’t just a delicious beverage, it creates a sense of wellbeing.

We believe that this has been forgotten about, many coffee shops serve chai that has very little in common with the origins of Indian chai and its historical story.

So this is our mission, to redefine our generations understanding of chai and bring the intense flavours, from all over the world, to the masses.
